Thanks so much for the wonderful article-rest assured that many of us in the LC and chronic illness space are well aware of this sleight of hand!
I’ve been ill with Long Covid since 2020 and have looked into all the main brain retraining and pain reprocessing programmes, to educate myself and to see if there is anything in there actually worth paying money for.
Also, after chasing Prof Garner all over the internet trying to get him to retract or qualify his ‘recovery’ story back in 2020, all the history relating to MECFS comes to light and I realise how long this has been going on.
The most terrifying thing I have found is that if you dig beneath the surface of these programmes, within a few lessons the psycho somatic bobbins is not even thinly disguised any more and they are suggesting you stop seeing doctors, stop meds or supplements; stop using wearables and increase activity levels while pushing through pain or discomfort.
Please stay well away. You know how to best spend your limited funds and it is NOT on this
I cannot describe how much I love this article. You’ve comprehensively and solidly debunked this horrible nonsense that has infected the whole of health care and which continues to cause so much damage.
The take issue with only one single point and that is the value of psychological support. If (I recognise it’s a big “if”) psychologists could be relieved of their flawed beliefs and properly trained to support clients with chronic conditions (with or without identified pathology) a lot of good could be done for this isolated and vulnerable group.
Thank you for taking the time to comment and thoughtfully engage with the article.
100% agree that psychological support is vital, hopefully the space dedicated to what a just model of mental health care could look like helped emphasis this.
Psychologists, as you rightly say, could do alot of good if the support was appropriate and their flawed beliefs were evaporated!
Phenomenal article that beautifully picks apart the nuance here. I see a lot of overlaps in the late diagnosed Autistic/ADHD community (who very commonly have some form of dysautonomia/hyper mobility syndrome) a lot of who have been gaslit over decades, dismissed and/or misdiagnosed with anxiety and other psychiatric conditions. Even now Autistic burnout isn't recognised as a condition in itself and there's no research. Thanks for writing this one 🙏🏻

Thank you SkyDancer for your insight - yes there is similarities here and you're so right in noticing the extent of the gaslighting.
